Secondary Dwelling Code

We were very pleased to see the gazettal of Amendment VC186 last week. It is another big milestone for DELWP’s Smart Planning Program and an important step towards improved housing outcomes.

The amendment introduces the Secondary Dwelling Code into the planning schemes of four pilot councils – Bendigo, Kingston, Murrindindi and Moreland for a 7 month trial period.

The Secondary Dwelling Code facilitates small scale dwellings on the same lot as an existing (or ‘primary’) dwelling in the Residential Growth, General Residential, Neighbourhood Residential, Mixed Use and Township Zones.

Applications that meet all of the Code’s requirements and certain ResCode standards can be assessed through the VicSmart assessment pathway.

You can read more about the secondary dwelling code here.

This reform will be an important step in achieving better housing outcomes, with greater housing diversity and affordability across our suburbs and regional Victoria.

The Glossop team worked with Smart Planning to draft the Code and identify opportunities for its implementation.

Well done to the Smart Planning team and particularly Fiona Delahunt, Rick Dixon, Melissa Thyer and Alison Fowler for their outstanding leadership in this reform. Our team, including John Glossop, Matthew Gilbertson and Nicole Vickridge are proud to have had the opportunity to collaborate with your team on this important reform.
